Vampire Advantage Number Seven (after super-human strength, Olympic-caliber speed, incredibly rapid healing, eating all the candy in the world without gaining an ounce (even Cadbury’s Easter Eggs, really!), drinking any amount of alcohol without getting drunk, and never needing to schedule appointments with a pulmonologist): There’s no such thing as a bad night’s sleep.

No matter how angry a vampire is with the mother-figure who has made impossible demands on her professional life and her love life, no matter how frustrated she is with a man who’s said he’ll call but hasn’t, no matter how out of sorts she is with a sister who hogs all the hot water and spends an excessive amount of time (by anyone’s calculation) worrying about idiotic things like makeup and clothes…No matter how stressed a vampire is, she can’t resist the need to sleep during daylight hours.

With will-power and a windowless room, I could stay awake almost three hours after sunrise. But every minute of daylight sapped my ability to think clearly. I lost the capacity to remember simple words. I stared into space for increasingly longer periods of time growing more distant and vague and finally, no matter how hard I resisted, I slept.

With a battery of alarm clocks and an ice-cold shower, I could force myself to wakefulness a couple of hours before sunset. But I couldn’t guarantee that I’d remember any conversation for the first thirty minutes. And I wouldn’t want to sign any important legal documents for the first hour.

All of which explained how I could fall asleep, clutching my phone as if it were my sole lifeline to the world, and wake up fully rested the following evening. Better yet, I awoke with a plan.

Chalk one up for medical school. My instructors had drilled into my stubborn skull the importance of not making assumptions. If I started a differential diagnosis believing a sprite had duckweed fever, I could easily miss a case of tuberculosis, transmitted by humans in a shared aqueous environment. Basilisks might fall prey to glaucoma at seven times the rate of Caucasian humans, but loss of peripheral vision could also be caused by intravenous poison from a salamander’s claws.

In other words, I couldn’t assume things were over with Peter until I’d tested that hypothesis.

I was through waiting for him to get in touch with me. I had his number on my phone, from the quick call I’d terminated in Mother’s office the night before.

After steadying myself with a quick recitation of the first hundred digits of pi, I tapped the green icon of a phone.

He answered on the first ring. “This isn’t a good time.”

“I need to see you.”

“I’ve got a solid block of meetings from nine to five.”

“Perfect. I’ll see you at Morning Joe in half an hour.” The coffee shop was a block away from the Five Rivers building.

“Kate…”

“You’ll have plenty of time to get to the office by nine.”

I hung up before he could make another excuse. It only took me a couple of minutes to brush my teeth and make my bed.
